Ovenbird Bakery is baking artisan bread and pastries in the heart of Baltimore. We produce European-style sourdough breads and pastries that use spices and flavors from Turkey, the Mediterranean, and beyond to create homemade products that incorporate tradition with a modern, global flair for the exotic. We create an experience of discovery for customers at affordable prices so that Ovenbird can become a staple part of people’s daily routine, whether it be your daily breakfast or your family’s daily loaf of bread. Ovenbird wants to reimagine and recreate the corner bakery experience grounded in community, support a diverse staff with a living wage and opportunities to gain wealth through hardwork, passion, and creativity.
Keiller Kyle began his career as bird biologist and conservationist not ever thinking that baking was ever going to be more than a hobby as he studied birds in the U.S. and abroad. The spark of inspiration came while enjoying the Great British Bakeoff in 2016 that baking in earnest, especially experimenting with sourdough bread, started him on the path of opening Ovenbird Bakery. It began humbly, baking loaves for he and Nadire, a native of Turkey who always lamented the lack of quality bread in the U.S., then loaves for friends, and then loaves for neighbors. Eventually those neighbors told their friends and baking bread became a weekly event, selling multiple types of bread and small pastries into the neighborhood around Patterson Park. With the support and encouragement of many friends and a family full of entrepreneurial tendencies, Ovenbird Bakery was established in 2019 and Little Italy was selected to start our corner bakery. Opening the bake shop in June of 2020, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was nerve-wracking to anticipate how people would respond to our burgeoning business, but since opening our doors to one customer at a time and 6ft space, Ovenbird Bakery has grown extraordinarily quickly, and expansion plans began after only 7 months of operation. By the end of 2022, after 2 years of being open, we will be settled into our new production facility and opening two additional retail locations in Highlandtown and the newly renovated Lexington Market. Thanks to an incredibly talented and committed team of bakers and a stellar sales team, Keiller’s initial goal of opening a quiet corner bakery has evolved into one of a thriving production hub that can serve Baltimore’s many neighborhoods and the greater region with gorgeous baked goods and an invigorating bakery-going experience.
